How battery backup works
During the day, your solar system produces more power than a typical home uses. Instead of sending all of that excess to the grid, a battery stores it. At night, or during an outage, your home draws from the battery instead of the grid — automatically, with no manual switching required.

How much backup do you need?
We offer three backup tiers depending on how much of your home you want to keep running during an outage:
Essential Backup
1 battery. Keeps critical circuits running — refrigerator, lighting, Wi-Fi, and a few outlets.
Extended Backup
2 batteries. Covers more of the home, including larger appliances for longer outages.
Whole-Home Backup
3 batteries. Sized to keep the entire home running, including HVAC, during an extended outage.
Meter collars: whole-home backup without a panel upgrade
Whole-home backup traditionally meant either upgrading your main electrical panel or wiring a separate backup subpanel for the circuits you wanted to protect — both add cost and time to an install. A meter collar (also called a meter socket adapter) is a device that installs between your utility meter and its socket, ahead of your main panel, to manage backup power without opening up or replacing the panel itself.

Whether a meter collar is the right fit depends on your existing panel, utility meter setup, and local permitting. Do I need a battery?
Not everyone does. If your main goal is lowering your monthly bill, solar alone (without a battery) usually gets you most of the savings. A battery makes the most sense if you want backup power during outages, live in an area with frequent grid shutoffs, or are on a utility rate plan that rewards using your own stored power during peak hours.
