Why homeowners add a Powerwall
- Backup power. When the grid drops, the Powerwall takes over automatically — no manual switching.
- Use more of your own solar. Store daytime production and use it in the evening instead of exporting it. This matters more under California's net billing rules.
- Outage protection in wildfire-risk areas. Utilities can shut power off in advance during high-wind, high-fire-risk weather (Public Safety Power Shutoffs), which can affect Inland Empire foothill communities.
What Powerwall 3 offers
- About 13.5 kWh usable capacity per unit (manufacturer specification).
- A built-in solar inverter, which simplifies installation on new systems.
- Whole-home backup capable when you install enough units.
- Monitoring and outage alerts in the Tesla app.
Capacity figures are manufacturer-published specifications and depend on system configuration.
How much backup do you need?
We size backup to how much of the house you want running during an outage:
Essential Backup
1 battery. Refrigerator, lighting, Wi-Fi and a few outlets.
Extended Backup
2 batteries. More of the home, including larger appliances, for longer outages.
Whole-Home Backup
3 batteries. Sized to keep the entire home running, including HVAC.
Whole-home backup without a panel upgrade
Whole-home backup traditionally meant replacing the main panel or wiring a separate backup subpanel. Tesla's Backup Switch is a meter-collar device that installs between the utility meter and its socket, ahead of your panel, and switches the whole home to battery power during an outage. In many homes it avoids a full panel upgrade. Whether it fits depends on your meter, panel and local permitting — we assess it during the consultation and recommend the configuration that gets you the coverage you want for the least cost and disruption.
How it works
Site assessment
We look at your panel, meter, and existing solar (if any) and decide how to wire backup.
Backup design
We match the number of Powerwalls and the backup tier to the loads you care about.
Permit & utility approval
We submit permits and any interconnection paperwork your utility requires for storage.
Installation
Our licensed crew installs and commissions the system and shows you the Tesla app.
Common questions
Can a Powerwall be added to solar I already have?
Often yes. Powerwall can be added to existing solar; how it connects depends on your current inverter and panel. We inspect the system and tell you the cleanest way to add it. See adding a battery to existing solar.
How many Powerwalls do I need?
It depends on which loads you want backed up and for how long. One battery covers essentials, two extend coverage, and three are sized for whole-home backup including HVAC. Our battery guide compares the tiers.
Powerwall or Enphase battery?
Generally, Tesla Powerwall pairs with Tesla string-inverter systems and Enphase batteries pair with Enphase microinverter systems. We install both, so we can recommend what matches your solar. Compare them on our Powerwall vs. Enphase page.
Does a battery lower my electric bill?
It can, by letting you use stored solar in the evening rather than buying from the grid, but the main reasons most homeowners add one are backup power and getting more value from their own production. We show you the numbers for your rate plan during the consultation.
